ST. PAUL, Minn. — The Minnesota Court of Appeals has decided that under state law, gas station carwash coupons do not operate as gift certificates, according Minnlawyer.com.
The ruling upheld the 30-day expiration dates the coupons have, noted the article.
The suit was brought after Donald Wells sued after purchasing a $7.99 coupon with an expiration date, stated the article. He claimed the date “violated a provision of 2007 consumer protection law that bars the use of expiration dates on gift cards.”

The district court dismissed the case, but Wells appealed the decision, shared the article. Eventually the appeals court affirmed the decision to dismiss the case.
Judge Michael Kirk wrote in his opinion that expiration dates are included to prevent jackpotting, the act of randomly punching in numbers to try and receive a free wash, stated the article.
Wells purchased the coupon at a Holiday gas station, which allows customers with expired coupons to obtain a new carwash code or cash refund, reported the article.
