NEW YORK — The New York City Council plans to pass legislation requiring local carwashes to obtain a license and a $150,000 bond to operate as well as meet environmental standards, according to Capital.
Melissa Mark-Viverito introduced the Car Wash Accountability Act two years ago prior to becoming a speaker of the city council, stated the article.
The new law would require city carwashes to obtain a license every two years through New York’s Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), the article continued.
“As part of the license application process, DCA would consider [a] carwash’s ‘moral character’ when issuing or renewing the license by reviewing the operator’s history of labor law violations, breach of contracts and workplace conditions,” reported the article.
Carwash owners/operators will also be required to meet specific New York City Department of Buildings and Department of Environmental Protection requirements if the bill is signed into law, such as obtaining permits for well water, reporting chemicals used in their operations and how much water they draw from public sources, noted the article.
